Emerging Markets Equity Strategy

The strategy seeks to provide exposure to high-quality growth companies in emerging markets at reasonable valuations while actively managing the opportunities and risks associated with those markets.

Philosophy

The team believes that well-run businesses in emerging markets can generate superior growth and sustain high returns on capital. As active investors, the team seeks to invest in the best of these companies at the right valuation, a strategy that has the potential to deliver long-term outperformance.

Senior Portfolio Manager, Emerging Markets Equity

Kathryn is head of the emerging-markets equity team and its lead portfolio manager. Prior to joining the firm, she served as fund management director for Jupiter Asset Management, where she was responsible for global emerging-markets equity funds, with additional management responsibilities for equity funds in Latin America and Eastern Europe. Prior to that, she worked as head of the global emerging-markets equities team at Lloyd George Management and in various positions at Invesco Perpetual, including as head of Asian investments and head of international equity products. Kathryn began her career with the Jardine Group and held roles at Jardine Fleming in Asia during the 1980s.

Philip Ehrmann

Senior Portfolio Manager, Emerging Markets Equity

Philip is a senior portfolio manager on the emerging-markets equity team. Prior to joining the firm, he was a co-head of Asian equities and a fund management director for Jupiter Asset Management. Previously, he was head of global emerging markets at Gartmore, where he later added the Pacific equity business to his responsibilities as head of Pacific and emerging markets. Philip started his career focusing on North American equities before becoming a portfolio manager at Invesco, where he was appointed to lead the firm’s emerging-markets desk.

Charlie is a senior portfolio manager on the emerging-markets equity team. Prior to joining the firm, he was a portfolio manager within the global quality capability team at Ninety One, a South Africa-based global asset manager. Previously, Charlie was a founding partner of Coupland Cardiff Asset Management, where he structured and designed the firm’s investment philosophy and was the lead manager of an Asian equity strategy. Prior to that, he served as director of Asia-Pacific research at JPMorgan and as a Hong Kong/China consumer analyst at JF Securities. Charlie began his career at HSBC Securities and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Talib Saifee

Talib is a portfolio manager and sector research analyst on the emerging-markets equity team. Prior to joining the firm, he was with HSBC Global Asset Management, where he was a portfolio manager and, prior to that, he worked as an investment analyst covering emerging Asian and Latin American markets. Previously, Talib worked at Goldman Sachs Asset Management as an analyst covering banks and telecommunications firms in emerging markets across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Additional prior experience includes roles at Citigroup, where he focused on strategy and corporate mergers and acquisitions, and at Salomon Smith Barney, where he was a financial analyst in the investment banking division.

Bryony is a portfolio manager and sector research analyst on the emerging-markets equity team. Prior to joining the firm, she was an emerging-markets equity fund manager at Mirabaud and, before that, at Aviva Investors. She has particular interest and expertise in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and implementation. Previously, she worked at Schroders as a senior equity analyst for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Her early career includes roles at WestAm and at Deloitte & Touche. Bryony holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

David is a portfolio manager and sector research analyst on the emerging-markets equity team. After joining Manulife Investment Management in 2002, he became a member of the firm’s European and Europe, Australasia, and Far East equities team. He worked on semiconductor modeling while earning a Ph.D. in Physics and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Bhupinder is a portfolio manager and sector research analyst on the emerging-markets equity team. He began his career as a generalist analyst on the emerging-markets team at Aberdeen Standard Investments covering Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. He also helped to co-manage the team’s Russian, Eastern European, and frontier market funds. Bhupinder holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
