U.S. forest management

We’ve been providing sustainable forest management services in the United States since 1995, and we’re passionately committed to providing a safe working environment and responsible stewardship on the properties we manage.

We have a 28-year history of providing high-quality forest management to our clients. Environmental stewardship is the core of our business, and we believe that sustainable forest management can reduce risks.  We’re committed to managing our clients’ forests sustainably and responsibly. In 2021, Hancock Natural Resource Group adopted the Manulife Investment Management brand. In the United States, our forest operations now operate under Manulife Investment Management Forest Management (MFM)—formerly Hancock Forest Management, Inc.

Property management

As of March 31, 2023, we manage approximately 3.2 million acres of forests located across the U.S. Pacific Northwest, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, and Lake States. Our local forestry personnel provide an extensive range of on-the-ground management services, including planting, growing, managing, and harvesting trees for products that meet a wide range of needs.

Safe working environment

Safety is a core value at MFM. We believe all injuries and occupational illnesses are preventable and that responsibility for safety is shared by our management, employees, and contractors. All personnel working with or for MFM accept this and are empowered to suspend any activity they reasonably believe to be unsafe.

Forest certification

As stewards of U.S. timberland properties, we recognize the critical importance of sustainable forest management to the communities in which we live and operate. It’s our goal to protect the future productivity of the land and ensure long-term maintenance and improvement of the soil, water, biodiversity, and community values of the forests we manage. All U.S. timberland properties are certified sustainable through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) certification

The SFI is an independent, nonprofit organization established in 2002. Its mission is to “advance sustainability through forest-focused collaboration.”  MFM has been certified to the SFI standard since 2000. To be certified, we’re audited annually by independent auditors accredited to the SFI.

For more information about the SFI, please visit the Sustainable Forestry Initiative website.
